How These Words Happened, by William Stafford

April 5th, 2007

In winter, in the dark hours, when others
were asleep, I found these words and put them
together by their appetites and respect for
each other. In stillness, they jostled. They traded
meaning while pretending to have only one.

Monstrous alliances never dreamed of before
began. Sometimes they last. Never again
do they separate in this world. They die
together. They have a fidelity that no
purpose or pretense can ever break.

And all of this happens like magic to the words
in those dark hours when others sleep.

The Fish, by Mary Oliver

April 5th, 2007

The first fish
I ever caught
would not lie down
quiet in the pail
but flailed and sucked
at the burning
amazement of the air
and died
in the slow pouring off
of rainbows. Later
I opened his body and separated
the flesh from the bones
and ate him. Now the sea
is in me: I am the fish, the fish
glitters in me; we are
risen, tangled together, certain to fall
back to the sea. Out of pain,
and pain, and more pain,
we feed this feverish plot, we are nourished
by the mystery.

now is enough

April 5th, 2007

Why that title? Well, you see, it went like this…

It was late last night and I was trying to pick a domain name I wouldn’t be tired of in a few days. I’m not sure I succeeded, but “now is enough” worked for a few reasons:

  • Much of what I write about ends up trying to elucidate my sincere feeling that one of the most important approaches we can take in our lives is to engage in the here and now as best we can. Of course the here and now is different for everyone and is always changing, so appropriate action varies widely. What’s for sure is if we get caught up in the wish for this moment to be other than it is, then we’ll just be chasing fantasies. To get anywhere, we have to start here, right where we find ourselves. Now is enough; face it and move forward.
  • I like the word play in the ‘nowisenough’ combination. You can also see, “no wise no, ugh!” in there, which pretty much sums up how I feel when all wisdom escapes me.
  • ‘Now is enough’ was good enough for last night and it’s good enough for now. I had to pick something.

language

April 4th, 2007

Language intrigues me. It has for a long time, probably since the days when Dad would screw around with words for fun. He’d make up words, twist them in ridiculous ways, and he always seemed to enjoy repeating the absurd colloquialisms of others. I think my current fascination with poetry and language in general goes back to Dad. The older I get the more I want to write my own unique (and hopefully interesting) expressions. Whether it be in poetic form or some other, I want to have fun with the words that shape our lives.

Right now I plan to use this blog as a place to share poetry— both my own and the poems of others I enjoy. Beyond that, perhaps I’ll just share writing of any form that speaks to me in some way, especially if it advocates the need to be present in our lives. Let’s see what happens…
